Abstract:

The collection consists of materials relating primarily to San Francisco's Congregation Emanu-El, including publications, annual reports, event programs, invitations, and rabbinical essays. The collection also has materials documenting the activities of Congregation Emanu-El's Cantor, Reuben Rinder, including: a copy of his April 24, 1949 essay, "Albert Schweitzer, Musician and Humanist"; a program for the first performance of Marc Lavry's Sacred Service (March 11, 1955); programs for a dinner and a musical program in honor of Rinder's 45th year of service to the congregation (February 22, 1958); and an invitation to and a program of an event held in honor of Rinder's 50th anniversary (May 17, 1963). It also has programs for a Sabbath eve service honoring Ludwig Altman on his 25th anniversary as the organist of Emanu-El (May 4, 1962) and for a tribute given to Rowie Rinder by the Sisterhood Guild of Temple Emanu-El (September 13, 1973). In addition, the collection has the programs of other cultural events at Congregation Emanu-El: a program for a performance of The Dybbuk (1928); a production of Cecilia Bartholomew and Richard L. Sloss's Religion and Democracy, a Pageant of the Eternal Light, (September 20, 1940); a production of Carol Levene's The First Century ... A History of Congregation Emanu-El (November 5, 1950); and a performance of Sloss's Graying at the Temples (October 2, 1955).
